Disney's Hollywood Studios, nestled within the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida, near Orlando, stands as a beacon of cinematic wonder. Crafted from the imaginations of Marty Sklar, Randy Bright, and Michael Eisner, this park first welcomed guests on May 1, 1989, under the moniker Disney–MGM Studios (Theme) Park. With 135 acres (55 ha) of enchanting landscapes, it transports visitors to an idealized rendition of Hollywood, California, paying homage to the glitz and glamour of the Golden Age of Hollywood across film, television, music, and theatre.
Originally conceived as both a tribute to show business and a bustling production studio, Disney's Hollywood Studios boasted active film and television production services, an animation facility branch, and a fully operational backlot. Construction commenced in 1987 but gained momentum when Universal Studios Florida, bearing similar thematic elements, began to take shape nearby. To enrich the park's cinematic repertoire, Disney struck a licensing deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), lending its name to the park. However, as the 2000s unfolded, the park's production facilities gradually made way for innovative attractions, and the once-bustling soundstages were repurposed for guest enjoyment.
In 2008, the park underwent a transformative name change, shedding its MGM branding to become Disney's Hollywood Studios. Embracing a fresh vision, the park pivoted towards immersive theming and attraction development inspired by the captivating worlds woven by Hollywood's storytellers. Over time, the park's identity evolved, distancing itself from its original studio-centric focus.
Iconic symbols have come and gone within the park's landscape. The Earffel Tower, a whimsical water tower adorned with Mickey Mouse ears, stood tall as the park's original beacon. In 2001, the Sorcerer's Hat, inspired by Fantasia's magical headwear, took center stage until its retirement in January 2015. Subsequently, the Hollywood Tower Hotel emerged as the park's defining icon, with the majestic replica of the Chinese Theatre captivating guests as its visual centerpiece.
In 2018, Disney's Hollywood Studios welcomed 11.3 million visitors, securing its position as the fifth most-visited theme park in North America and the ninth globally—a testament to its enduring appeal and cinematic magic.
